LiPo 101: The Basics

  • LiPos are the lightest type of rechargeable R/C batteries.
  • A 2S pack is a “2-cell” pack. A 3S is “3-cell”, etc.
  • LiPos also offer the highest voltage per cell: a minimum of 3.7V!
  • The voltage of a 2S (2-cell) pack is 2 x 3.7V or 7.4V. “3S” is 11.1V, “4S” is 14.4V and “5S” is 18.5V
  • Cells in ElectriFly packs are voltage-matched for higher performance.
  • Cells are wired in series and can be charged to the maximum of 4.2V/cell!
  • Balancing (also known as equalizing) helps cells reach maximum voltage and also conditions cells for longer life.
  • LiPo cells have lower internal resistance, which helps packs stay cooler even while delivering more amps.
  • Maximum available amps = discharge rate x pack capacity in amp hours (Ah). 700mAh = 0.7Ah.
  • Burst discharge rates — for sudden, high-amp maneuvers — can run as high as twice the continuous discharge rate.
  • Self-discharge rates are extremely low, so packs can be charged long before they’re needed.
  • Packs are ready for immediate use. All are assembled and shrink-wrapped, with separate leads and connectors for charging and discharging.
Please note: LiPo packs cannot be charged with NiCd or NiMH chargers. They require a cell balancer and LiPo-compatible charger, or a LiPo-compatible balancing charger. (See links below for the ElectriFly Equinox and other quality charging equipment!)
